Michael Thompson to perform Britten Serenade

January 9, 2009

British horn soloist Michael Thompson

Michael Thompson, the acclaimed British hornist, will perform Benjamin Britten’s Serenade for tenor, horn, and strings in New England Conservatory’s Jordan Hall on Friday, January 16, at 8pm.  the tenor soloist is Michael Slattery and the Cantata Singers string ensemble will be directed by (former hornist) David Hoose. For information and tickets see the Cantata Singers web site.

On Saturday, Jan. 17, at 2pm, Mr. Thompson will give a lecture demonstration on his approach to the Serenade at Osmun Music, 5 Forest St. , Arlington. Please call (781 646-5756) or email the shop for reservations as seating is limited.

Michael Thompson is one of Britain’s most distinguished horn players.  His career began with his appointment at age eighteen as principal horn of the BBC Scottish Orchestra. Three years later he was appointed principal horn of the Philharmonia Orchestra, a position he held for ten years before leaving to pursue his chamber music and solo career.  Currently he performs solo and chamber music and is active in the London studio scene. He also conducts frequently and holds the Aubrey Brain chair of horn performance at the Royal Academy of Music. He has performed the Serenade many times and recorded it twice (with Anthony Rolfe-Johnson and Adrian Thompson).  For more information about Mr. Thomson see his website.

Please Note: As I write this on Friday, Jan. 9, Mr. Thompson has still not been granted an entry visa by US Customs and Immigration. If they do not do so very soon Mr. Thompson’s appearances with the Cantata Singers and at Osmun Music will have to be cancelled. We will keep everyone who reserves for the masterclass updated by email.

Change in Schmid Purchasing Procedure

December 12, 2008

Back in October, in response to the economic crisis, we stopped publishing an Engelbert Schmid price list. The dollar was (and is) rising and falling in value so rapidly and unpredictably that any printed price list was obsolete as soon as it was published.

At that time we capped the price a buyer would pay for a horn to prevent unpleasant surprises. Now, we’ve established a new policy: If you pre-pay a horn and the price falls 3% or more by the time we actually have the funds to pay Schmid (which can take up to two weeks from the time we get the check) we will refund the difference to you. See our Purchasing Procedures page for details.

Hard-to-Find and Back in Stock

December 10, 2008

When you deal with small vendors and esoteric items as we do it’s common for things to go in and out of stock frequently. We’ve recently received mechandise from two of our smaller makers.

Antique Paxman Pins

November 2, 2008

We’ve just found a stash of these very classy looking Paxman lapel pins. They were made for use in a promotional campaign and feature the original crossed horn logo, not used by Paxman since the early eighties. The pins are black and white enamel over silver plate and will look good under someone’s tree. Click here to order.

Lower Prices on Schmid Horns

October 31, 2008

For the past year we’ve been dismayed as the value of the dollar has steadily eroded, driving the cost of foreign-made goods, like Engelbert Schmid horns, out of sight. At the dollar’s low point a Schmid double horn with lacquer and waterkeys cost over $12,000!

Then, in September, the economy collapsed. Paradoxically, as the stock market falls the value of the dollar tends to rise. (In times of uncertainty the US dollar is still the strongest, safest currency in the world.) This has presented Schmid horn buyers with an opportunity.

We have completely revamped our Schmid horn sales. Instead of publishing a price list we will now quote every horn (and bell) according to the daily exchange rate. This will allow us to offer the lowest possible prices on these instruments. Customers will have the choice of prepaying and locking in the rate or pay a deposit and paying the balance at the rate available when the instrument is completed.

An example: a typical double horn, yellow brass, lacquered, with two water keys, that sold for $12,170 in February would sell today for $9000, a savings of $3170. For more details see our Custom Horn Purchasing page.

New Horn Mouthpiece from Schilke

September 24, 2008

Schilke has introduced the new 30C2 French Horn Mouthpiece. This design is unlike most of the horn mouthpieces Schilke has produced over the years. The 30C2 has a deep cup and a number 8 bore size, very comparable to a Giardinelli C8. The rim is much more narrow and squared than your average Schilke rim, and the high peak of the rim is closer to the outer edge of the mouthpiece. This 30C2 will work great on Kruspe style horns like the Conn 8D, Yamaha 668, Holton Farkas, and Hoyer 6800 Series.
